Diana Allen and her Sanford seventh graders were are working with us this week to test the data collection-entry-viewing process the whole way through. Yesterday - a crispy and bright fall day - we observed data collection (paper) at Number One Pond, and let the weed weasel fly at Number Two Pond. Today - a chilly gray day with sprinkles - is data entry in the classroom with Image Works. Here's hoping the photo upload goes smoothly. Tomorrow, data viewing. I predict sunshine and a slight breeze.
Similar to the Falmouth data entry test, we're planning to give students minimal instructions and assist on a group-by-group basis as troubles and confusion arise. Same tact for data viewing, though Diana may put together a "scavenger hunt" for the classes we don't observe.
Note: We need to understand better the context in which Diana is framing this research investigation, and what learning goals she has for her students. We need to make sure to ask her to compare experiences from one class to the next, how she refined and evolved her approach, how students responded....

It would be really cool if teachers could share their activity ideas, approaches, thoughts and revisions with each other, but in a way that we could all see.
